Why do I need Montana Truck Insurance?

There’s more to driving a truck than being a capable driver and maintaining the safety of your vehicle. On top of regular maintenance checks, you need the right insurance. Although insurance rates are on the rise, insurance is necessary if you care about protecting yourself and your drivers while also complying with the law. Regardless, finding the right insurance can be difficult, especially if you’re looking on your own and aren’t sure where to begin. Fortunately, we’re here to help you find the best insurance for your needs at the right price point.

While insurance is mandatory throughout the United States, there are variations from state to state. If you’re looking for Montana truck insurance, read on to learn more about why you need truck insurance and why you should use an independent insurance agent to get the right deal.

Montana Commercial Truck Insurance

  • Truck Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is required in every state, and it’s easy to understand why. Accidents happen, and when those accidents involve trucks, they’re pricey. Montana is particularly strict about liability coverage—failure to carry proof of insurance can cost you stiff penalties and even jail time. Regardless of state laws, it is beneficial for you to find the best liability coverage possible. Liability insurance makes sure that any injuries or damage sustained by the other driver or vehicle are covered. The state of Montana requires that truck drivers and businesses hold a minimum level of liability insurance, which depends on your haul and where you’re driving. For example, if your truck doesn’t cross state lines and is over 26,000 GVW, you are required to acquire an intrastate-only USDOT Number and be insured.

  • Physical Damage Coverage

Physical damage coverage is not required by law, but it is necessary for protecting your business. According to the FMCSA, “the average cost of all large truck crashes is about $91,000 per crash,” and this number only increases if there are injuries. With physical damage coverage, you’ll be protected against potential losses caused by a crash, such as those incurred by a truck being put out of commission.

  • Motor Truck Cargo

Motor truck cargo insurance is needed by for-hire truckers to properly cover the commodities they are hauling. It is generally required by the party who owns the product being transported. This ensures that if their goods are damaged or stolen while in transit, their assets will be covered. Montana requires that each vehicle has a minimum of $10,000 cargo insurance. Depending on the cargo that is in transport by your big rig, you may need specific endorsements. For example, if you transport refrigerated goods, you will need to make sure you have “reefer breakdown” coverage. This might cover a $50,000 load of ice cream if the reefer unit fails while driving along I-90. Of any line of 18-wheeler insurance, cargo insurance is the one you need to understand and pay attention to the most. You usually get what you pay for, and some carriers will make a long list of exclusions that specifically exclude coverage for certain events.

  • Truckers General Liability

While truckers general liability is similar to liability coverage, it is slightly different. This coverage is designed to protect your business from damage that might occur when your truck is standing still instead of when you are behind the wheel. If you have other aspects of your business—such as a quarry or a consolidation warehouse—you will need a more robust general liability insurance policy that considers exposures outside the realm of trucking.

Why Should I use a Montana Insurance Agent?

Find Insurance Programs Specific to Your Needs

While one-size-fits-all options exist, they usually don’t provide the best fit. Insurance is like a jacket you want to fit just right. So, even though it’s tempting to go to a general insurance provider and try to mold a policy to meet your needs, you’ll find that it is much easier and more effective to find a program that caters to your needs from the get-go. The best insurance program works with the specific kinds of trucks you drive. At TIS, we provide market access to numerous niche truck insurance programs, including programs for the following:

Instant Certificates of Insurance with our Mobile App

You can never predict when you will face an emergency. At TIS, we know how frustrating it can be to try to contact an agent in the middle of the night, which is why we provide 24/7 support through our mobile app. You’ll get the help you need instantly, and our app can issue your certificate of insurance no matter where you or your drivers go.

Get Assistance with Montana Truck Permits & Filings

It can be difficult to keep track of all the laws and regulations that come with trucking insurance. Permits come and go, and you’re expected to know when they expire and to get them renewed. The right agent will understand this and help you keep your trucks compliant with all state regulations. At TIS, our permits department is well versed in all things trucking, and we are prepared to adapt to the ever-changing system. When updates come up, you’ll be the first to know, and we’ll ensure you have all of the necessary Montana trucking permits that you need to keep driving.
